Holistic Healing vs Modern Medicine
I am just beginning to delve into this topic as it applies to my search for an overall healthier, happier, more productive lifestyle. All of the research I have done thus far has me intrigued. I have, surprisingly, found myself getting wrapped up in reading what is more or less different doctors, registered dieticians, and other professional's points of view on the topic of health. Let me first say this... I do not have a complete distrust for the medical profession. There have been some really amazing advances... No one can deny that... I do, however, feel that we as a general population have been sadly mislead by some individuals, corporations, and pharmeceutical companies with their own agenda. Whether it be an attempt to see more dollar signs and lead a cushy, extravagent lifestyle (or in these economic times, maybe just a lightly lavish lifestyle), or giving in to the high demands of a society that wants a quick fix, there are some grave injustices and potentially life threatening discrepancies in the health care system... and that is without even addressing the topic of insurance. I do not think doctors are out to kill us. Why would they go into the profession if they did not want to help others while making that paycheck? If all they cared about was money they could have just become career thieves. The doctors themselves could have been mislead by their educators and pharmeceutical companies or looking to give their patient the quick diagnosis and answer they are looking for. When all is said and done doctors are spending only a limited amount of time with a patient and are truly only making an educated guess that can drastically affect their patients life.
All I am suggesting is that you do your own research before just blindly following the "doctors orders"
Ask questions- Informed decision making is key! Pretty self explanatory... but remember it is your own well being and ask as many questions as possible. Ask about any affects of and alternatives to that prescription or antibiotic, ask about holistic healing, get second and third opinions, have them to break it down to you not only in medical terms but in a language you can easily understand... And then still do your own research. I have found that the internet has thus far been my most valuable source of information. While you cannot believe everything you read on the internet, it is the biggest forum that I know of for discussion on virtually every possible topic. There are usually opinions representing both sides and everything in between so you are free to come to your own conclusions then you may decide to go back and consult with a medical professional as to the validity, pros, cons, etc. Just remember they are not God and their word is not the end all. You should not let one bad diagnosis send your thoughts and emotions on a downward spiral. It is just as much mental as physical. Healing relies greatly on the patient's willingness as Bob Proctor illustrates in his 2007 book The Secret. In a quote from this extremely popular book, Bob Proctor explains, "In Holistic Medicine there is an understanding that healing comes from with-in, not from out-side of you, every dis'ease comes from the emotions, just think of the word it self (dis'ease)-to be in a place of un'ease in the body." Another source that supports and explains this way of thinking is www.newagecounselling.com. Go to articles, then holistic-healing. Rather hear it from a Dr.? Easily found online is Dr. Joel Evans. I love his approach to medicine because he utilizes both holistic healing and modern medicine.

If you do opt to use antibiotics they should be used in conjunction with probiotics. Antibiotics kill all bacteria, good and bad.. Probiotics replace the good bacteria... a little known fact that I personally was never told by any doctors. It was not until I had a week long hospital stay of which they ran a barrage of tests, never figured out was wrong with me, prescribed me an antibiotic anyways, and sent me home that my aunt later called to check on me and after telling her I was on an antibiotic she highly recommended I go to the drug store to find a probiotic as well. I later asked one of the doctors that had treated me and she confirmed that this would be wise. So why did she not tell me this until I asked? Not really sure
Think more about your diet- The word diet seems to be associated with losing weight but the implications vastly range beyond something superficial. All your body has to go on is all you put in it. There is virtually nothing in our fast foods that your body needs. There are however natural power foods. Ailments can be treated through your diet and thus not leading to the medical merry go round of treating everything with a pill that has its own set of side effects. The beauty of treating ailments through a diet chalked full of vitamins and minerals is that you could be killing (or in this case saving) two birds with one stone. Prescriptions and antibiotics are generally used to treat a specific ailment or disorder where as one vitamin or nutrient can have multiple positive effects on your health. You can of course do some research on your own. A very valuable online source of information that I have found is the www.energiseforlife.com website. That is an excellent start and if you want to optimize results I would advise speaking with a registered dietician. One thing I was shocked to learn about and that I would advise everyone else to learn more about is the importance of becoming alkaline. Freaky how much your internal Ph effects your overall health and well being. I found that a lot of websites will try and charge you for information pertaining to this topic where the above mentioned site does not charge. The truth of the matter is most goodies, fast foods, and even some "health" foods affect your ph negatively and I am not one for living miserably so it is all just about finding some kind of balance. Maybe just being more conscious when you are indulging will empower you to later counter with a healthy snack or meal.

There is a difference between the U.S. government's Food Guide Pyramid and the Healthy Eating Pyramid. We are following this food pyramid that we have been taught since grade school is healthy so when we fall a little short we think we are still doing excellent when in all reality it does not set the bar very high. Not like any of us actually come anywhere close to eating what we should but it would at least be nice to know what we should really be striving towards. So why are we told something is optimal when indeed it is not?
Healthy lifestyle choices- This is best used as a preventative tool to avoid being reliant on modern medicine later in life (i.e. an iron lung or liver transplant). We have all heard the effects smoking, drinking, unprotected sex, reckless driving, etc., etc. on our health but are we really listening? It is truly tragic to figure out these truths after the matter. Some will creep up on you and some can have instant implications but it all does in some way affect your body and your value of life. People will say you only live once as an excuse to party hard but what happens when that same person spends the last leg of that one life shacked up in a hospital with failing organs and a body that is fighting just to sustain life. Don't get me wrong, I am far from perfect and consider myself to be a pretty indulgent person actually. Once again it all just comes back to being conscious and finding a balance. I used to drink pretty heavily, not frequently, but still heavily. This was fun to me but the hangovers were not. So one day I realized... OOOOH...Hangovers are your body's way of screaming for help! Even if it is not often it still has a very negative effect. So now I still like to drink but just in moderation and maybe even wine instead of beer (wine is less acidic, going back to the Ph thing).
So now, all of that being said... I would just simply suggest trying some alternatives and thinking outside of the box. Are you treating the symptoms or correcting the actual cause of those symptoms? Do not value the quick fix more than your own long term health and well being.
